Arsenal was founded by a few workers of the Woolwich Arsenal Armament factory who formed a team in late 1886.Their first match was against Eastern Wanderers on December 11, 1886 and they won the match 6-0. After which the name Royal Arsenal was adopted and the club still played friendly matches and participated in local cup competitions for a couple of more years. In the year 1891 the club changed its name to Woolwich Arsenal and decided to become professional. It finally joined the football league in 1893, after which they moved to their current location Highbury in 1913, as a second division side. After the First World War they moved to the first division and have remained there ever since.
