Edin Dzeko | The Goal-Scoring Machine

Bosnia flagHe shoots, he scores. This sentence can perfectly describe Edin Dzeko’s recent form. The Bosnian forward just can’t stop scoring goals! He is the main reason for AS Roma’s good form and consistency in Serie A. The Wolves have won all of their home league matches this season, mainly because of their good performance in attack.

Edin Dzeko has scored 19 league goals in 25 matches from the beginning of the season, as he is topping the goal-scorers’ list (alongside with Higuain) in the Italian Serie A. The forward has a total record of 29 goals in all competitions this campaign and he will probably set a new personal record if he keeps going like that. So far, Dzeko’s best goal-scoring stats date back to 2008/09, when he found the net on 36 occasions, winning the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg’s colours.

The Bosnian striker scored 11 goals in Roma’s last 8 games in all competitions. Dzeko bagged a hat-trick against Villarreal in The Europa League, as The Wolves won 4-0 away from home. Even though he is now 30 years old, Edin Dzeko is on the top of his form!

Dzeko is also Bosnia and Herzegovina’s top goal-scorer of all time with 49 goals in 83 caps. He took part in the World Cup 2014, when he even managed to find the net once against Iran, becoming the Man of The Match. He will now strive to help his country find a place at The World Cup in 2018.

However, the Dzeko’s main task at the moment is to help Roma finally win the Serie A, which is going to be extremely difficult, but not impossible. For the purpose, he will need to keep scoring goals. Moreover, Roma’s team seems strong enough also to compete for the trophy in The Europa League. We will see how far The Wolves will reach at the end of the campaign.

The UEFA Nations League

euro 2016 matchUEFA is going to replace the European international friendly matches and make them competitive! The decision has been made and since 2018 all the 55 UEFA national teams will take part in a competition, called the UEFA Nations League. It will be made of 4 divisions (A, B, C and D).

The higher rated UEFA teams will be seeded in the upper divisions, as the A division will be the highest. In addition, there will be 4 groups in each division. The winners of the 4 groups in each of the divisions will take part in the playoffs and eventually in a final game. The winners of the finals of each division will qualify for the Euro 2020! If the winners in each group have already qualified for the final tournament through the regular qualifiers, it will be replaced in the playoffs by the second-ranked in the group.

This competition will affect the qualifications. There will be 10 groups, as usual, from which the best two teams will find a place in the final tournament. This time, there won’t be playoffs for the third-placed teams in the regular groups. The last 4 participants in the Euro 2020 will be determined from the UEFA Nations League!

Moreover, the winners of each of the lower divisions’ groups will promote to a higher division and the last teams in their groups will be relegated. This will make the qualifiers even more interesting, as it will reduce the number of friendly matches.

Another important thing is that the tournament will start in September 2018 (before the regular qualifiers) and the group stage of the Nations League will last until November 2018. The beginning of the regular qualifying campaign will be in March 2019.

In conclusion, it now sounds a little bit complicated, but once started, I am sure you will be very passionate about it!

Big Premier League Expenses

Football moneyAfter the end of the January transfer window, we can see a new spending record in The Premier League. This time the record was for the total amount spent by all the clubs. How does it sound £1.4 Billion spent during the two transfer windows?

I would say that the amount goes to show the incredible financial power of the English clubs, but my brain still can’t realize how much money that is! Moreover, you became spectators of football’s victory over the money during the previous season, when Leicester City won the title. I think the expenses of most of the clubs were unnecessary, as Chelsea have almost won the title!

So, after all these expensive purchases, the only manager who has surely done his job accurately is Antonio Conte. The results are obvious, as Chelsea have no real competition for the title. All the others – Josep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Jose Mourinho, Mauricio Pochettino and Arsene Wenger can be questioned about all the spent money.

To begin with, Guardiola found it really difficult in The Premier League, as everyone expected. The Spanish manager bought Stones, Sane, Gabriel Jesus, Gundogan, Nolito and so on, spending £181.05 m. However, Jose Mourinho spent £89.25 m. on only one player (Paul Pogba). The Portuguese also bought Mkhitaryan (£35.7 m.) and Eric Bailly (£32.3 m.).

Arsene Wenger, as always, made silly transfers. The French manager bought Xhaka, giving Borussia M’gladbach £38.25 m. for the player with the most red cards in the European top leagues for the past two seasons.

Jurgen Klopp spent £5.27 m. on a goalkeeper, who can’t even catch the bus… The only quality signing – Sadio Mane went to the Africa’s Cup of Nations and Liverpool lost on 3 consecutive occasions (being eliminated of The FA Cup and The Capital One Cup).

In comparison, Leicester City spent only £42.42 during the last season, when they won the Premier League title. However, no one is interested in saving money, as even the last team in the standings will receive £100 m. from the TV rights!

Francesco Totti | The Prince of Rome

Football fansEven at the age of 40, Francesco Totti is still one of the best football players in the world! The Italian attacking midfielder started his professional career in 1992 and just a year later he made his debut for The Wolves against Brescia at the age of 16!

Since then, Francesco Totti has become one of the Roma’s legends! He has scored 307 goals (250 in Seria A) in 773 matches for The Wolves in all competitions and keeps going! The midfielder is among the most loyal football players, staying at Roma during his whole career!

The Roma’s captain managed to win the Italian Seria A only once in 2001, finishing in 2nd position on 8 occasions. However, I am sure that if he was in another team, he would have done it many more times, but his heart belongs to Rome. In addition, Totti has lifted the Coppa Italia twice (2007 and 2008) and Suppercoppa Italiana (2001 and 2007).

He was an integral part of the Italian national team, which won the FIFA World Cup in 2006. Totti scored the winning goal against Australia in the Round of 16. Furthermore, the attacking midfielder took part in UEFA Euro 2000, when Italy became the runners-up. The attacking midfielder scored 9 goals in 58 participations for the Italian national team.

Francesco Totti scored his most recent goal for Roma yesterday. He converted a penalty into a goal against Cesena in a match from the Coppa Italia, sending his team into the semi-finals of the competition!

At both ends, Francesco Totti can decide every single game with just one pass! He had a great impact on his team in the defeat against Sampdoria last week. However, I am happy that I can still watch such a world class player taking part in top flight matches. I wish he stays for another season.
