Bayern Munich, a transfer policy debacle 2009/10
By Tom
- Bad transfer decisions:

- Let Lucio go - no, better - tell him to leave because the new boss thinks he knows every player without even meeting them.

- Get no adequate replacement for Lucio, but count on a 19 year old talent to fix what already did not work last year with two top class center backs (now Bayern went from a world-class defensive lineup (sagnol - lucio - demichelis - lahm) to an amateurish one (lahm - van buyten - badstuber - braafheid) within two seasons.

- Get no new keeper and stop looking for one as soon as the also error prone Neuer is not to be got. (Why not a solid Frey, Enke, Wiese, Benaglio, Buffon type of guy? - Buffon might be unrealistic, but the rest isn't.) Really, Rensing is a nice guy but he should just go and try to sort his issues out elsewhere. Butt has long passed his best years, that already was the reason for Leverkusen to get rid of him.

- Don't spend money on solving the obvious problems on the right back position (aka Lell). Buy Braafheid (!) and Pranjic who can play on the left (in Braafheid's case not well enough for Bayern) and experiment with Lahm on the right (he thinks he's better there but I'd like to respectfully diagree.).

- Buy Mario Gomez for €30m, another striker of the Luca Toni, Miro Klose type (i. e. physically strong, good goal instincts - absolutely no technique in shooting or dribbling, not deadly quick, not creative enough)

- Get no creative player to support Ribery, although you originally planned it. While Stuttgart loan Hleb for little money, also get progrebnijak for €7m (something we tried, but never accomplished to do) and Hamburg (wait I need an extra bullet point for this!)

- ...And Hamburg take on Ze Roberto (yes we prefer to keep crazy old van Bommel instead so that we can keep seeing the nut-job acting like a 14 year old bully on the pitch for another season again...) who was the only other creatively gifted midfielder we had last season (could it be that van Gaal dislikes the playing style of Brasilians?!?!)

- Olic and Tymoshchuk were the only supportable new signings for this season (while both of them are not going to win Bayern any titles at any point in time.)

- Oh and about van Gaal, I like his 'very tough-nut but fair' approach to the thing, but start doubting whether he hasn't also passed his best years (like Toni, Klose, van Bommel, van Buyten, Butt.) His decisions to take all the resources Bayern offered him to get Braafheid and Pranjic, get rid of Lucio are more than weird.

The key question is, how can Hoeness, Rumenigge and even Nerlinger see this squad and say: OK this is it we are done and ready to win titles this season. They need to act quickly...

Haha, very true though. Bayern used to be able to be a frightening prospect, now they are beatable, the bench is not scary enough, as admirable as it is to give local talent a chance, they won't win you titles like Wolfsburg who are buying confirmed talents.I was very shocked you let Lucio go so easily, if he cried tears for his country, he'd cry tears for Bayern, you would not have been so gutless today with him around. Enke is still on the market, stop messing around and get him, then move Lahm back to left back, he is not as effective on the right.

Bayern need to sign a top class goalkeeper if not bayern could lose out on the cl again like in the 06/07 season. For me Ballack would solve half the problem. 1. Bayern have never been as good since Ballack left and Bayern are crying out for a new experienced captain. 2. Ballack is still a quality midfielder and could link up with Ribery very well.

I could not agree more on some remarks. No goalkeeper, no creative midfield. It will be a difficult year for us.

I really don't want to exaggerate anything here. I just don't get why other teams hardly ever need 6-7 games to finally internalise a new manager's system. Why is Bayern the only team where they always say: "we need another 2-3 months until we can play well..." Hamburg have a new coach, Leverkusen too and so do Wolfsburg and Schalke, they don't need 6-7 matches. Why do we?!

I agree with Michael. I think we actually look more dangerous in attack than last year. I was never a fan of Toni and now we have Gomez in place of him. But we shouldnt have two alike strikers playing at the same time(Klose/Gomez). We need one of those and Olic to play off of each other. I would actually like to see Olic in the midfield. He would be an animal hustling for every ball. Thats what we need, a spark. As far as defense and the goal, it still looks mediocre.

Tom...We not only have a new coach...a totally different formation ..a passing logic last seen in early days of Magath but also as many as 6 players playing together for the first time...We might not have got a win as of yet ..but another day , with a bit of luck..we could have won the first two games 4-1 and 3-1 ...Man U lost to Burnley , Liverpool have lost two that doesn't mean these teams are rotting either...

Of course you have a point there Michael. I am well aware that Bayern Munich will not experience a complete demise this season. Things will eventually start to improve. It's a question of time. Still, my blog post tries to point out that our transfer policy throughout the last two-three seasons has been suboptimal to say the least. All the new players, new managers and new playing styles have become necessary this season because our management failed in continuously improving and growing the team over the past few seasons. Many wrong decisions were made with transfers of players and personally I think that it's the same for this season too. I feel that Braafheid if he continues like this will probably be gone by the end of this season, maybe Pranjic will follow and the situation in goal, defence and midfield still needs to be rectified too. Bayern is a great club, with a good team. It won't fall from grace completely, but I see that it is developing in the wrong direction. Finally, I keep on asking myself, why is it always Bayern Munich that needs an extra amount of time to get used to new coaches and systems and has issues integrating new players? I am really just wondering... and perhaps you could provide an answer...

Tom...The answer is given in the last entry...if the team hadn't worked well , they wouldn't have created the umpteen number of chances in the first two games , which unfortunately our sharp end couldn't convert...As far as transfer policy goes..I agree Braafheid is an unknown player..but pranjic is a proven international in the Salihamidzic mode...The real trouble is the fact that there are a lot of quality players who will never want to play in Bundesliga.... Hope you have seen the werder match where Werder was playing a formation of 9-0-1 after the goal..but still we created many chances ..sheer passing play...My point is , this blog might have come out of frustration and disappointment of no win in 3 games ...remember Sir Alex Ferguson didn't win anything with Man U for almost four years...

Yes, you are right. This blog entry really came out of frustration about the first few matches of the season. Still, as a really longstanding Bayern fan I am not too worried about this season, or the start of it. What I am worried about is the direction towards which the team and club are developing to. As I said, this season's transfer policy is just another round of disappointing decisions from Bayern's management, replicating what has happened in the past few years. And to be completely honest, also you will have to be a little disgruntled when you ask yourself what great improvements we have seen from the team internationally since 2001? Despite the fact that I've seen all three matches in full length (and all friendlies as well) I have to disagree with you on the point that the team is yet working well. Even against Union Berlin, Bayern seemed unstable in the defense and lacked creativity and will (as expressed in continuous movement) in its offensive play. As for your comparison to Man U and Sir Alex not winning anything in his first few seasons, I'd like to remind you that the Bundesliga is not as strong as the Premiership. Not winning it for Man U is not the same as not winning the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich - although it seems that this is changing at the moment.

perhaps they shouldve tried to buy Carlos eduardo from hoffenheim and sure Robben is a great buy. Sneijder would've been a much better choice. or they can even get van der vaart now.
