Born in Madrid in 1981, Casillas has spent his entire career in his hometown club, whom he had joined when he was only eight-years old. As a part of the Spanish teams which won the UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup and FIFA World Youth Championship in 1999, his debut year came in 1999/2000, when he replaced the injured Bodo Illgner and played in Madrid's UEFA Champions League triumph in an all-Spanish final against Valencia CF. His senior team mates Raúl González, Fernando Morientes and Steve McManaman scored in the 3-0 win. A loss of form subsequently allowed César Sánchez to take the number 1 jersey but Casillas claimed the position back after substituting César in the 2001/02 Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen and preserving Madrid's 2-1 lead with a series of fine saves.
