Sevilla beaten 3-2 after extra time as Real Madrid lift the trophy

The Royal club won the UEFA Super Cup after a very dramatic victory over Sevilla, winning 3-2 after extra time. It was the third Super Cup for Los Blancos and the fourth lost final for Sevilla, who were beaten in the European Super Cup for the 3^rd time in three years.

Zinedine Zidane could not count on Cristiano Ronaldo, who was injured in the Euro 2016 final. Toni Kroos, Pepe and Gareth Bale were also sidelined, while Luka Modric, James Rodriguez and Karim Benzema started on the bench.

Even so, Real Madrid pressed Sevilla very high from the start, and it led to a goal for the Royal club. The young talent Marco Asensio scored a magnificent long-range goal in the 21^st minute. Sevilla, however, were the better side in the first half and equalised, deservedly, four minutes before the break through new signing Franco Vazquez.

Sevilla turned the game around in the second half when the referee awarded a controversial penalty, converted by Yevhen Konoplyanka in the 72^nd minute. Zinedine Zidane immediately sent on his first-choice players Modric, Benzema and James Rodriguez. Real Madrid were fortunate to equalise in the very last minute of the game, and once again Sergio Ramos was the hero for Los Blancos, scoring the equaliser in added time.

The Champions League winners were simply better in extra time and missed several good chances. Just two minutes before the final whistle, Daniel Carvajal dribbled past several Sevilla’s players and finished with a terrific shot to bring the trophy to Real Madrid. It was only Carvajal’s fourth goal in Real Madrid colours, but a hugely important one.

Real Madrid produced a really good performance and, despite missing a large number of key players, the Royal club lifted another trophy. Sevilla also showed they are a big club, but were unlucky once again.

The road to Trondheim

The 2016 UEFA Super Cup was played on 9 August 2016 at the Lerkendal Stadion in Trondheim, Norway, in front of 17,939 spectators, with the Serbian Milorad Mazic as referee. Both clubs had earned their place in May. Real Madrid won the 2015/16 Champions League on 28 May 2016 at San Siro in Milan, beating Atletico Madrid 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, with Cristiano Ronaldo converting the decisive kick. It was the club's 11th European Cup, a record. Ten days earlier, on 18 May 2016 in Basel, Sevilla came from behind to beat Liverpool 3-1 in the Europa League final through goals from Kevin Gameiro and two from Coke, winning the competition for the third season in a row.

Sevilla, coached by Jorge Sampaoli, had a mixed history in the fixture. They won the Super Cup in 2006 against Barcelona, but lost the finals of 2007 to Milan, 2014 to Real Madrid in Cardiff, 2015 to Barcelona in Tbilisi and then 2016 in Trondheim. Sergio Ramos, whose equaliser arrived in the third minute of stoppage time, was named man of the match, and Carvajal's winner came in the 119th minute.

How Real Madrid's season continued

The Super Cup turned out to be the first of several trophies for Zidane's side. In December 2016 Real Madrid won the Club World Cup, beating Kashima Antlers 4-2 after extra time in the final, with a hat-trick from Ronaldo. They then won La Liga with 93 points, the title secured on 21 May 2017 with a 2-0 win over Malaga, the club's 33rd league championship. On 3 June 2017 they beat Juventus 4-1 in the Champions League final, Ronaldo scoring twice and Casemiro and Asensio adding the others, and so won the Champions League for the second season in a row. Real Madrid also won the Super Cup again in August 2017, beating Manchester United in Skopje.
