The Meeko - Week 7 - Footbo

At Sunderland, Arsenal faced a team similar to Hull in that their opponents sat back and soaked up Arsenal's pressure, were fortunate Arsenal didn't convert most their chances but took the chances they had well. Leadbitter's goal was a good one without a doubt. Personally I have been annoyed with Adebayor recently who, with all the fuss he made in close season, should be contributing more.
United were no surprise away to Blackburn and although they were lucky again with the Vidic foul on the keeper they did deserve their win. What a technically brilliant goal from Rooney, which bodes well for England. I fancy him to get a few in the upcoming Internationals.
City versus Liverpool surprised me, I thought it would be a tighter game. What character Liverpool showed coming back from 2 down with Torres again popping up with the goods. City can be pleased with SWP again though, he seems reborn now and must deserve a start for England... I think he must just pip Theo on account of his experience at International level, although with Gerrard back in contention perhaps neither will get a look in. The ref missed a dangerous tackle by Skrtel on Jo but limped off injured later on... was this justice? City were unlucky to conceed the goal from the corner, I think it was Liverpools only corner of the game.
Chelsea took all 3 points again beating Villa 2-0. The difference between Lampard and Barry highlighted two things. Firstly the gap between the two clubs and secondly the lack of quality midfielders available in England after Lampard and Gerrard. Lampard out-played Barry on every occassion and Gareth will have been pleased to hear the final whistle. Lamps was involved in both goals and set up Cole well, who contines to prove that if you put him in he will finish in style.
Yakubu was excellent for Everton but the game against the Toon finished all square, which I think was just about fair. Newcastles first half display seemed disorganised but Steven Taylor did well to score when he did and I feel he could be a better full-back than centre-half. I was impressed with Baines, he did well going forward and by making that excellent goal-bound block he proved he can defend as well.
I felt West Ham versus Bolton could have gone either way and the 1st goal was always going to be important. It was a shame for West Ham that the normally solid Rob Green was having a terrible day. Jlloyd Samuel continues to impress me and I am liking the look of the Bolton squad, I expect them to do well at home in 2 weeks against a reeling Blackburn side. What a great free-kick from Matty Taylor!
Talking of great free-kicks Geo scored another fantastic goal to compound Tottenham's woes. It couldn't have been any more top left corner if he tried. The Spurs players looked nervous and playing at home would have been even worse than playing away considering the current form. Poyet said after the game that there were many small problems at WHL... Well, what problems exactly Gus? Tottenham fans should be demanding to know what is going on at the Lane. It is not acceptable. Perhaps Levy is the problem?? Should they lose at Stoke in 2 weeks surely Ramos will go? Will that be the right thing to do? What do Spurs fans think of him? The Spanish press certainly didn't think he was all that...
Peter Crouch scored a very good bicycle-kick and an important goal for him. After his goals in Europe that league goal will do wonders, he has always been a confidence man. He'd be my hot tip to nab a few in the coming weeks. Harry must be chuffed his duo were both on the score sheet and he'll be hoping to see a lot more of it. Defoe is a changed man and I feel as though he looks physically stronger these days as he roughed through a few challenges on Sunday that would normally of seen him off. Stoke got a goal from a long throw again... what can be done!?
West Brom are picking up and did well beating Fulham, this result did surprise me. When will Fulham get it together? Middlesbrough versus Wigan was another non-event but Southgate will be well pleased with that result. I see Zaki didn't score this week ;)

Finally, good luck to all teams in the International break and may all players stay injury free. I believe England will beat both Kazakhstan and Belarus confidently.

I think youre right with your analyzation of the english midfielders...we really miss quality! Perhaps thats a side effect of all the money in our league..Teams like Manchester are not intersted in buying english middle class or young players, they want to buy already 'built' players!

I am a Manu fan, but for me the win was a surprise...Before the game I was afraid we could lose. In the last games we played too unconsistent, but a game like this shows why manu is (one of) the best team of europe! Also if the team is not fit, there are Amazing individulas (this time Rooney who rescue our team!

Im sorry but Rooney is everything but an amazing individual! Also the whole last year he was one of the weak players in a fantastc Manu team! We all know that with all the injuries a part of his talnet is gone...

Hopefully Sep will take note of Platini's recent comments and wage cap all of Europe. That will help home grown talent. Without this, the Prem League will continue to attract overseas talent to the detriment of its national starlets. Thanks for your continued comments Jonathan, ManU do seem to be doing the business week after week no matter what. Thats the beauty of having the squad they have, there is always a match winner in there somewhere. I don't think Rooney is quite back to his best but there's no doubt in my mind that he won't hit that sort of form again soon. He's showing signs of developing his game, don't forget he's still young.

I have to disagree with any who writes Rooney off. I agree with Simon on this one. Firstly he is only young, and although he's had many injuries early in his career, he has never actually lost his basic footballing ability like many big names we see around us. Secondly, he has football running through his veins. Not only does he have a good footballling ability but also the brains behind what to and what not to do. He also has heart and spirit which drives him to run around the pitcch and help wherever help is needed. Not many strikers would give up the scoring to a winger but Rooney is totaly unselfish and plays for the team. I've seen him play Tevez and Ronaldo in time and time again which is perhaps why he hasn't been scoring so often but by no means is he not a fantastic individual. Although I am an arsenal fan, I can't say a bad word about Rooney.

city - liverpool... showed that liverpool has character right now, and grinding out results, fighting back is what champions are made of. Just hope we can push it all the way. Oh, and rooney is class, no doubt.

simon, who you tipping for the title? you might have said before and i might have missed it. Geo's goal against the spurs was a cracker...as top-corner as they come. Was it a fluke?! haha

I think these are the big contenders,,, Man U also, but in the next games they will lose points, remember!!!

hey Craig, your totally right! there is only a small chance to win the tite for liverppol, but if we fight the whole season like we did in this game we have a chance!

So, if Rooney is such an amazing striker as you all say, what are his enormous talents and abilities?
Created by: Tom Fridge       Posted on: 13.10.2008 02:24
I think if Manu is able to bypass the nest 3 weeks with performances like this (winning without really playing so fantastic, but having amazing individuals who score every other time and are able to 'rule' a game by themselves), they have a great chance to win the premiership. But still I think it will be a hard race with chelsea (and perhaps also liverpool after this performance).

Talents you say. I don't know where to start. Firstly, his incredible vision. Its no wonder Ronaldo scores so many goals. Rooney always manages to get the ball to him. His awareness is pretty brilliant. His passion dries him on like Gerrard for liverpool. He is strong, fast and has a brilliant shot. Isn't the tad bit greedy - A true team player. He has great stamina, and always helps the team where help is needed. There is much to write, I might even write a blog dedicated to the guy.
