Description

Wigtown & Bladnoch F.C. are a football club from the town of Wigtown in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland who play in the South of Scotland Football League.

They were originally formed in 1907 as Wigtown United but changed their name to Wigtown & Bladnoch FC in 1919. Bladnoch is a small village barely a mile from Wigtown but was the base for two of the largest employers in the area. Bladnoch Distillery was founded in 1817 by the McLelland brothers as the southern-most distillery in Scotland, and Bladnoch Creamery, founded in 1899 by the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society.[1]

They play their home matches at Trammondford Park, which has room for 1,500 spectators, more than room enough for the crowds they attract. The club motto is "moving forward – to achieve our goals".

They have competed in the South of Scotland Football League since the League reformed in 1946, although they resigned for seasons 1962-63 and 1972-73 due to financial problems.[2] They have won the Championship on three occasions.

Wigtown have also appeared in the Scottish Cup on ten occasions but their only moment of glory came in January 1952 when they beat Scottish Football League side Montrose 2-1 at Links Park, Montrose. In the Second Round they were drawn at home to Dundee but lost 1-7, although Dundee did go on to play Motherwell in the Final that year.[3]

The current club is not thought to be connected to any earlier manifestations of Wigtown Football Club which existed from 1889 to 1905, or indeed to Wigtown Wanderers F.C who existed from 1880 – 1885.[2]
