Description

Norwich City Football Club was founded in 1902. They have been playing their home games at Carrow Road since 1935. On 6 September 1902, the Club played their first competitive match against Harwich & Parkeston at Newmarket Road. Later in 1905, Norwich was admitted to play in the Southern League. During the First World War, Norwich City went into deliberate liquidation on 10 December 1917 and was officially reestablished on 15 February 1919. On 28 August 1920 the club played their first league fixture against Plymouth which resulted in a 1-1 draw.

First Years

In 1934, the club was promoted to the Second Division after a club record victory of 10-2 over Coventry. The Football Association was worried that The Nest wasn’t an appropriate venue, so the club decided to move to a new location at Carrow Road. On 31 August 1935 the inaugural match against West Ham United ended in a 4–3 victory for City. The league was suspended the following season as a result of the outbreak of the Second World War and did not resume until the 1946–47 season. In the early 1950s, under the guidance of Norman Low, the club narrowly missed out on promotion. The comeback of Tom Parker as a manager in the 1956-57 season was a disaster -  City finished bottom of the football league.

In 1958-59 season, Norwich were placed into the Third Division. They defeated two First Division sides, Matt Busby's Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, but they went out in the FA Cup semi-final. City were promoted to the Second Division in 1960, after finishing second to Southampton. Two years alter, Norwich won their first trophy in a two-legged League Cup final against Rochdale. After flittering between the divisions, City made their first appearance at Wembley Stadium in a League Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur in 1973. Sadly, they lost- The demotion to the Second Division in 1974 resulted in the resignation of Saunders and the appointment of John Bond. Bond quit his job during the 1980–81 season and the club was demoted again, but they made a strong comeback the following season after finishing third.

Winning the Milk Cup

During the 1984–85 season, after defeating Ipswich Town in the semifinals, Norwich managed to win the final against Sunderland (1-0) of the Milk Cup at the Wembley Stadium. After the Heysel Stadium disaster, Norwich were denied their first foray into Europe with the ban on English clubs. CIty bounced back to the top flight immediately by winning the Second Division championship in  1985–86. They reached the FA Cup semi-final in 1989 and again in 1992. In the inaugural season of the English Premier League 1992-93, Norwich City led the table for most of the season. They subsequently qualified for  the  UEFA Cup and became the first English team to defeat Bayern Munich away. They knocked out the Germans 3-2 on aggregate but then lost out against Inter in the third round.

1994 till today

In January 1994, Mike Walker resigned as Norwich City manager and was replaced by coach John Deehan who helped the club to finish  12th place in the Premier League. They were relegated in 1995 but won the First Division title in 2003-04 campaign to return to the top flight The next season they defeated Newcastle United and Manchester United but couldn’t stave off relegation. As results in the 2006–07 season went against Norwich, the pressure mounted on Nigel Worthington and led to his sacking on October 1, 2006. Peter Grant was appointed as his successor but left the club by “mutual consent” on October 9, 2007.
