Description

The club came into existence in 1882 after Newcastle West End and Newcastle East End merged.

Newcastle United became one of the most succesful clubs in the early 20th century and won the League Championship in 1905, 1907 and 1909. The club also performed well in the cup competitions and reached the finals in 1905, 1906, 1908, 1910 and 1911. However, they went on to win only a single final against Barnsley at Goodison Park in 1910. In 1908-09, the team suffered a 9-1 defeat by local rivals Sunderland. In 1927 they won the League for the fourth time after the World War I. United went on to play the FA Cup final in 1924, their  second final at Wembley Stadium. Newcastle team defeated Aston Villa and went on to win their FA Cup.

History

During the 1950s, within a span of five years the team lifted the FA Cup trophy on three occasions. Firstly they defeated Blackpool 2–0 in 1951; the next year they beat Arsenal 1–0 and defeated Manchester City 3–1 in 1955.

Players like Bobby 'Dazzler' Mitchell and 'Wor Jackie' Milburn became legends. The return of player like Joe Harvey also contributed to the team’s success after the end of World War saga. The high profile players teamed up with Stan Seymour and helped Newcastle United to return to the elite as Second Division Champions in 1965. During late sixties, the team got transformed into an unpredictable side that took challenges and defeated the best teams.

In 1968, for the first time the team qualified for Europe and astonished many by winning the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup by defeating strong rivals like Feyenoord, Sporting Lisbon, Real ZaragozaRangers and Hungary's Újpest FC in the final. The United got transformed into a reliable team after their prominent on-field play. In the following years, the club got a team of talented players like Malcolm Macdonald, Jimmy Smith, Tony Green and Terry Hibbitt who became all-time favorites among the football fans. Malcolm Macdonald became a strong player and with his impressive goal scoring tally led United’s attack during the FA Cup and the League Cup. Though the Magpies were unsuccessful in getting the trophies home, however they did get small consolation for putting in their best efforts in the Texaco Cup in 1974 and 1975.

By 1980s, the United’s performance had started declining and they reached in the Second Division. Arthur Cox helped to get United back to the First Division during 1982. With team managers like Willie McFaul, Jack Charlton and Jim Smith, the team remained in the top slot before being relegated in 1989. The Newcastle United was struggling to achieve good ranking. Though Sir John Hall was trying his best, the team perhaps was praying for a miracle that could save them from further slipping down to the Third Division. Miracle did happen, when the team won the two final League games against Portsmouth and Leicester City.

Premier League

The 1992–93 seasons brought some good moments for the United Team. The team efficiently won the eleven league games but suffered defeat by 1-0 against Grimsby Town. Newcastle became Division One champions, with their attacking display of exciting football and a win at Grimsby which got them a promotion to the Premier League. Under Keegan’s guidance, the United team experienced success quite often with their attacking flair and securing a third position during the 1993-94 seasons. During the 1995-96 seasons, the club had a close brush with victory at the Premier League and was ahead of Manchester United but unfortunately suffered defeat. The match against Liverpool has been described as the greatest ever Premiership match, where Newcastle united lost the match by 4-3. The 1996–97 seasons saw Newcastle once again finish in second place, and during this campaign, Newcastle recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory over Manchester United.

During the 2001–02 seasons, Newcastle got a chance to get qualification for the Champions League after finishing in 4th place. However, this did not stop Robson from being sacked in 2004, and Graeme Souness took over. The decision however proved to be unsuccessful and unpopular and even Souness was sacked from his job. Glenn Roeder replaced Souness. During the same time, Alan Shearer overtook Jackie Milburn for being the club’s highest goal-scorer. At the end of 2005–06 seasons, Shearer retired with a record of 206 goals for the club.
