The club came into existence in 1882 after Newcastle West End and Newcastle East End merged. Newcastle United became one of the most succesful clubs in the early 20th century and won the League Championship in 1905, 1907 and 1909. The club also performed well in the cup competitions and reached the finals in 1905, 1906, 1908, 1910 and 1911. However, they went on to win only a single final against Barnsley at Goodison Park in 1910. In 1908-09, the team suffered a 9-1 defeat by local rivals Sunderland . In 1927 they won the League for the fourth time after the World War I. United went on to play the FA Cup final in 1924, their  second final at Wembley Stadium.
