History

Liverpool played their debut match in the 1893-94 season, and winning the Lancashire League. The team was also elected to the Football League Second Division during the same season. By the end of the season, Liverpool was known as the Second Division Champions and later was gradually promoted to the highest level of English football, the First Division. In 1901, they won their first Football League championship and repeated this feat in 1906 as well. They played their first FA Cup final in 1914 but could not perform well, which led to their 1-0 defeat by Burnley. The year 1922-1923 saw them winning their League titles under the leadership of Ephraim Longworth. The team however, was demoted to the Second Division in 1954 after their defeat against Birmingham City.

In 1959, Bill Shankly was appointed as the manager. Under his guidance, the team was transformed into a top club side in Europe. He reshaped the entire squad into a group of motivated and dedicated individuals. In 1962, the team won the Second Division Championship and got promoted to the top division. In 1964, Liverpool won the League Championship after a gap of seventeen years. They also defeated Leeds United in the final of their first FA Cup and later on won the League Champions again in 1966. In 1973, they won their eighth league title by winning their European trophy against Borussia Mönchengladbach. They won the European Cup on May 25, 1977.

1984 was an historic year for Liverpool as they completed the treble; winning the the domestic league, the League Cup and the European Cup for a fourth time in 1984 against Roma.

On May 29, 1985, Liverpool finished as runners-up in the Europe and on the same day the entire nation witnessed a tragedy; a wall collapse killed 39 fans.

Kenny Dalglish’s reign in 1985 after becoming the first player-manager, saw the squad winning three League Championships and two FA Cups. In 1991, Graeme Souness was appointed as the manager but apart from an FA Cup win, his tenure did not bring much success. Later, Roy Evans took over and some team improvements were seen. The only trophy that they won during his reign was the 1995 League Cup. The season 2000-01 is considered as the most successful season for Liverpool as the team won the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup. The period from 2002 to 2005 helped the team in getting transformed into a remarkable team while the 2006-2007 seasons saw the club, being the most disciplined club in the League with out a single red card.

Rafa in Charge

Spanish coach Rafael Benítez took over at Liverpool in 2004 and in his first season guided Liverpool to a fifth position finish in the Premier League. However, he also led the club to its fifth European Cup, by beating AC Milan on penalties, after having come from 3-0 down to tie 3-3 after extra time.

Last and current Season

During the 2007-2008 seasons, Liverpool made a remarkable start by winning the opening match to secure a 2-1 win at Villa Park. After defeating Derby County by 6-0 at Anfield, Liverpool made an entry into the top spot for the first time in several years. The team also won the record for scoring the highest number of goals (8-0) in the UEFA Champions League match held on 6th November 2007 against Beşiktaş.

Fernando Torres was the actual inspiration to a 4-1 victory against group leaders Porto. After the match Jamie Carragher said, “Torres is a world-class striker and he's probably up there with anyone now in striking terms. I only have to mark him in training, thankfully”.
