Achievements

Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio or the Italian Football Federation is the governing body for the football sport in Italy. It is affiliated to UEFA. The Italian national football team played its first international match against France in May 1910, registering a 6-2 win. The first major victory for the team came in the 1928 Summer Olympics, when it won the bronze medal. This success was followed by victories in the World Cup in 1934 and 1938, and the gold medal in the 1936 Summer Olympics. However, doom set in for the team during the Second World War, when it lost its 10 prominent players in an air disaster.

Taking a closer look at Italy’s participation in the World Cup, it has taken part in 17 tournaments and been the host in 1934 and 1990. The team has emerged victorious in 4 World Cups – 1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006. The most memorable victories were in 1934 and 1938 when Vittorio Pozzo was the coach and the team included star players like Luis Monti, Giovanni Ferrari, Silvio Piola, and Virginio Rosetta. The victory in 2006 was also a memorable one. At the 2006 event, which was hosted by Germany, Italy defeated Ghana, USA, Czech Republic, and Australia in the initial rounds. In the quarterfinals it defeated Ukraine 3-0 to take on and defeat Germany 2-0 in the semifinals. In the finals match Italy had a remarkable 5-3 win against France after penalties. Some of the important players who contributed to Italy’s fourth World Cup victory in 2006 were Andrea Pirlo, Vincenzo Iaquinta, Alberto Gilardino, Daniele De Rossi, Marco Materazzi, Filippi Inzaghi, Gianluca Zambrotta and Luca Toni.
