Club pages on founding dates, grounds, colours and derbies

Founding dates, grounds, colours, derbies and first titles: the five questions every club page on Footbo answers.

What makes a football club history

A football club history starts with a date and a name, and the name is often not the one on the badge today. Manchester United began in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR, a works side of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, and only took its present name on 24 April 1902. Liverpool began the other way round: the ground came first and the club second, formed on 15 March 1892 by John Houlding after Everton, his tenants at Anfield, walked out over the rent.

Those two openings show the pattern that runs through every club page on Footbo. Five questions come back each time, and the answers rarely fit on a scarf.

  • Founding. Who started the club, where, and under what name.
  • Grounds. Where the team played before settling, and when the move happened.
  • Colours. What the first shirts looked like and when the familiar kit arrived.
  • Rivalries. Which neighbour or old enemy shapes the fixture list in supporters' heads.
  • Honours. The first league title, the first cup, and the long gaps in between.

Founding names, grounds and colours

Grounds tend to outlast everything else. United played at North Road and then Bank Street before opening Old Trafford with a match on 19 February 1910, and the club has stayed there ever since. Liverpool never moved at all: Anfield had been Everton's home from 1884, and when Everton left for Goodison Park the new club simply took over the pitch and the stands.

Colours are the detail people get wrong most often. Liverpool started in blue and white, close to the Everton kit, before switching to red shirts and white shorts in the 1890s. United's red and white arrived with the change of name in 1902.

Rivalries and honours

Rivalries explain a club better than any trophy count. Liverpool have Everton across Stanley Park in the Merseyside derby; United have Manchester City across the city. And the two of them have each other, in a North West fixture that has been played with real bitterness for decades and is covered match by match in several of the pieces listed below.

Honours are where a history gets its shape, because the dates are rarely evenly spread. Liverpool were champions of England for the first time in 1901, nine years after formation. United needed 30 years from the Newton Heath days to win the league in 1908, then lifted their first FA Cup a year later with a 1–0 win over Bristol City. A good club page sets those early titles next to the barren stretches that followed, since supporters remember both.

How the Teams section is organised

Each club gets one long page rather than a scatter of short ones. The page runs in order: origins and founders first, then grounds and kit, then the eras that defined the club, with managers and title-winning sides named, and finally the rivalries and the records. Shorter match pieces sit underneath as dated articles, each one tied to a single game, transfer or cup run.

Manchester United and Liverpool have full histories. The Manchester United history follows the club from the railway works at Newton Heath through the Munich air disaster of 1958 and the long Ferguson years. The Liverpool page covers the split from Everton, the Kop, the Shankly and Paisley sides and the club's European nights. Both are reached from the cards at the foot of this page.

Other clubs appear in those dated articles instead. Middlesbrough, Leicester City, Sunderland and Legia Warsaw turn up there, usually in the middle of a cup run or a relegation fight.

Reading a club page

Dates on Footbo are checked against club records and standard references. Where sources disagree, the page says so. The date United became United is a good example: club sources give 26 April 1902, while a newspaper report from the time points to the 24th.

Founding stories also attract myths. A club page keeps the version that can be traced to a record, and drops the rest.
