The club was formed in 1884 and initially they played at the Racecourse Ground. They started off by competing in numerous friendly matches and informal competitions and they also entered the FA Cup. The Derby County was among the founder members of The Football League when it was started in 1888. By 1895, the club shifted to a new location, The Baseball Ground which became their home ground for the next 102 years.   Derby appeared in their first FA Cup final at Crystal Palace on 16 April 1898 but lost the match by 3-1. They became the losing side again in the finals of 1899 and 1903. In 1907, Derby was demoted to the League's Second Division but with the help of Jimmy Methven's guidance, they regained their First Division place in 1911. In 1914 they were relegated again, but quickly won the Second Division to get promoted. They were relegated yet again in 1921, just after 2 seasons. But they bounced back and became a challenging force, with high finishes from the late 1920s and all through the 1930s.     Later Derby got to the final of the FA Cup in the 1945-1946 seasons and won the match against Charlton Athletic 4-1 after extra time. After a break due to World War II, the League restarted the following season but Derby could not replicate their old form and were relegated in 1953. They got relegated to the Third Division in 1955 but were promoted after two seasons. In 1967 the Brian Clough became the team manager and led his side to glorious triumphs. After much speculation over the signing of Dave Mackay, in 1969 Derby were promoted to the First Division, finished fourth in 1970 and suffered a ban in 1971 from competing in Europe due to financial constraints and were the champions of the Football League in 1972. Though the club could not sustain their title the following season, they managed to reach the semi-finals of the European Cup.   Later Clough's continuous comments against the club’s establishment eventually led to the fall-out and he left the job in 1973. Despite the exit, Derby won the League title again under Dave Mackay and thus repeated their League success. However, towards the end of the 1970s Derby 's form declined and they slipped down to the Second Division in 1980. They played well in the first season, but their stay in the Second Division was not very satisfying and they were relegated Third Division in 1984. After the demotion, the club selected Arthur Cox as the manager who did a great job by helping his team to get promoted to the Second Division and later returning to the old First Division in 1987.   In the 1988-1989 seasons, the club finished fifth and had a good side with players like Dean Saunders, Ted McMinn, Peter Shilton and Mark Wright . In late 1993, Cox resigned due to health reasons and Roy McFarland was selected as the next team manager. McFarland was unsuccessful in helping the team to get to the top division. Derby County also lost against Leicester City in the 1993–1994 play-off final. Jim Smith was then selected as the club's new manager and though the season started slowly, the signing of Igor Stimac proved to be important. Smith guided the team to a second-place finish and a qualification at the Premier League.   During the 1996–1997 seasons, Derby County gained instant recognition with an amazing Premiership début and were ranked 12th in the final table. The club continued in its best form for the next two seasons, but faced decline in form thereafter. In 2000–2001 Derby escaped the relegation by finishing 17 th . In October 2001, Jim Smith quit his job as manager and was replaced by Colin Todd, an assistant manager, who stayed with the team for just three months. He was sacked after the team faced defeat at the FA Cup Third Round against Third Division players Bristol Rovers . John Gregory was appointed Derby manager at the end of January 2002; despite a good start their seven defeats from their final eight fixtures led to their relegation.   The club entered a serious financial crisis after their relegation that forced them to loan out their key players. Gregory was sacked from his manager post over alleged differences and George Burley was bought to take care of responsibilities temporarily. He later received the job on a permanent basis. In the 2003–2004 season, Derby finished 20th but improved dramatically in the 2004–2005 season and finished 4th in the Football League Championship.   Later Burley quit his job because of the differences between himself and the board and Phil Brown took over. Brown remained unsuccessful to lead the team efficiently and after a series of bad results, was sacked in January 2006. Terry Westley took over the team responsibility and helped Derby to avoid possible relegation.
