History

The Brazil national football team was founded in the year 1914 and is presently controlled by the CBF. They are the most successful football nation in the world with 5 World Cup wins. Thus for football, it is rightly said that, “The English invented it, the Brazilians perfected it”.

The team played their first match in 1914 which was played between Rio and São Paulo select team and Exeter City F.C., the English Club. The Brazilian team had won the match by 2-0. The Brazilian team was eliminated at early stages during the 1930 and 1934 World Cup tournaments. But the team bounced back and finished at third place during 1938. In the year 1950, Brazil hosted the World Cup tournament. The tournament was held at the Maracanã stadium with Brazil needing a single draw to win the tournament. Unfortunately, they lost the final match by 2-1 to Uruguay. Until this very day, this defeat to Uruguay is considered the darkest hour in Brazilian football.

After the Marcana defeat, the team again qualified for the 1954 World Cup, in Switzerland. Despite having a team of good players like Djalma Santos, Didi and Nílton Santos, Brazil had a disappointing defeat against Hungary by 4-2 and was eliminated.

The golden era

The period from 1958 to 1970 is considered to be the golden era in the history of Brazilian football. During the 1958 World Cup, Brazil faced some strong teams like Austria, the USSR and England. Their first match was against Austria which they won by 3-0 while they had a draw with England during their second match. The Brazilian team went on to win the semi-finals against France by 5-2. This victory against France was enough to boost the team’s confidence and Brazil went on to win the World Cup (1958) by defeating Sweden by 5-2. The World Cup saw the rise of what was to become the greatest player of all time, Pele!

1974 - 1990

The team produced some average performance during 1974 to 1990. Brazil found it difficult to retain the World Cup title during 1974 after the retirement of some key players, including Pelé.

While the 1978 FIFA World Cup was notoriously controversial, the team played exceptional football during the 1982 FIFA World Cup finals. Under the guidance of Telê Santana, they won their group matches and defeated Argentina in their second-round match by 3-1. However, the team suffered a defeat against Italy by 3-2 and was eliminated from the tournament. The 1982 team is still considered as the greatest team to have been eliminated from the World Cup. Though the team participated in the 1986 and 1990 FIFA World Cup, they could not win the tournament.

Word Cup 1994

The team experienced huge successes during 1994 and 2000. The team won the 1994 World Cup, 24 years after winning the World Cup in Mexico. Romário was declared as the key player who led the team to a record fourth World Cup title. After a very respectable campaign, Brazil finished as runner-up in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Though the team played well, they lost the finals to France by 3-0. The star player, Ronaldo could not perform well as he suffered a nervous breakdown just few hours before the match. On the other hand Zinedine Zidane played exceptionally and led his team to victory.

2002 World Cup

Brazil won its fifth championship at the 2002 World Cup, thanks to the team efforts by players like Ronaldo, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho. In the World Cup 2002, Brazil went ahead winning against Turkey, China and Costa Rica. They scored 11 goals and topped the group. Further, they went on and defeated Belgium by 2-0. In the match against England, Ronaldinho scored a remarkable goal and led the team to 2-1 victory. The semi final was played against Turkey where Brazil won by 1-0 while the finals was played against Germany. Brazil won the finals rather easily by 2-0.

World Cup in Germany

As for most World Cups, Brazil was seen as the favorite team at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The team defeated Australia 2-0, Croatia 1-0, and Japan 4-1. They defeated Ghana 3-0 during the second round. However they were defeated in the quarterfinals by France by 1-0. The team faced intense criticism for their failure to perform well at the World Cup. After the world Cup exit, Dunga was hired as Brazil's new team coach. Dunga's first defeat as Brazil's coach occurred in February 2007 against Portugal. The team bounced back and in March 2007, won friendly matches in Sweden against Ghana (1-0) and Chile (4-0). Later Dunga assisted the Brazilian team to Venezuela, for the 2007 Copa America. Brazil played against Argentina in the finals. The team surprised everyone with their good play and won the match by 3-0.
