An informal get together of a group of young men from Eicken, a small district in Mönchengladbach, Germany, led to the formation of FC Germania München-Gladbach in late 1899. This group was formally established as FC Borussia Mönchengladbach on August 1, 1990. Since the term ‘Borussia’ is a Latinized form of Prussia and is commonly used to name German football clubs, it could give rise to confusion in the mind of a foreigner. Borussia Mönchengladbach has more than 30,000 members and is Germany’s fourth largest club. It plays in the first division of Bundesliga, the highest football leagues in Germany.
