Description

Arsenal was founded by a few workers of the Woolwich Arsenal Armament factory who formed a team in late 1886.Their first match was against Eastern Wanderers on December 11, 1886 and they won the match 6-0. After which the name Royal Arsenal was adopted and the club still played friendly matches and participated in local cup competitions for a couple of more years. In the year 1891 the club changed its name to Woolwich Arsenal and decided to become professional. It finally joined the football league in 1893, after which they moved to their current location Highbury in 1913, as a second division side. After the First World War they moved to the first division and have remained there ever since.

First Trophy

In the year 1925 Herbert Chapman took over Arsenal and guided them to their first ever trophy by winning the FA Cup final against Huddersfield. In 1933 and 1935 the club did manage to win a hat trick of league titles which is an achievement in itself as only been achieved by four teams in the top flight as on date. After the Second World War the team was in great troubles but, Tom Whittaker came as a ray of light in the dark and became manager. With Tom success returned to Arsenal London. Arsenal managed to win Championship titles in 1947/48 and 1952/53. They were FA cup Winners in 1950 and runners up in 1952. However, the 60’ was not a very bright decade for them as they had two losing appearances in the League Cup Finals.
Bertie Mee took over the team in 1966 and he brought to Arsenal the pleasure of holding their first ever European trophy in 1969/70 against Belgium side Anderlecht.

1970's

The 1970s were a mediocre time for Arsenal and it was only with George Graham who took over as manager from Don Howe in 1986 that success and glory returned. He was responsible for leading Arsenal to their first ever League Cup Triumph in 1986/87, winning against Liverpool 2-1 in the final. Two years later they won their league championship with a last minute goal from Michael which led to this victory. After which another title followed in 1990/91, when the defensive back four, just lost one league game. There was yet more winning to come along their way. In 1992-93 Arsenal became the first club to win both domestic cups in the same season. It also won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1993-4. Unfortunately, Arsenal failed to retain the trophy the following season losing it to Real Zaragoza in 1995. In 1997/98, Arsenal achieved for the second time in the Club’s history, the League and FA Cup ‘double’. Dennis Bergkamp was named Football Writers Association (FWA) Player of the year.

1999 until today

The 1990s and 2000s were very much dominated by Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman joined Arsenal in 1996. Arsenal won a second league and cup double in 1997–98 and a third in 2001–02.

Arsenal has finished in either first or second place in the league in eight of Wenger's eleven seasons at the club. They are one of only four teams to have won the Premier League since its formation in 1993. Until recently, Arsenal had never progressed beyond the Champions League quarter-finals; in 2005–06 however, they reached the competition's Final, the first club from London to do so in the competition's fifty-year history, but were beaten 2–1 by FC Barcelona. In July 2006, they moved into their current stadium, the Emirates Stadium, after 93 years at Highbury.
