1.FC Köln or simple “Der FC”, as its fans refer to, was formed by the merger of Kölner BC 01 and Sp Vgg Sulz 07 on Feb 13, 1948. The reason for the merger was to improve the performance of both clubs. In 1950, the club adopted a goat as their mascot. This is the reason the club getting its nick name of “Die Geissböcke” (The Billy Goats). The dreams of the two clubs that merged came true in 1962 when they won the German Championships. Two years later, FC Köln won the first German championship of the newly founded Bundesliga.
