Young Ronaldo and his move to Eindhoven

Young Ronaldo made his breakthrough at the age of 17 when he was called up to play in Brazil's national team. He performed well and got selected for his country's 1994 World Cup squad. Because of his tender age, the young Ronaldo was kept as a substitute and watched on the sideline as his team won the 1994 World Cup.

Ronaldo's international appearances helped him get noticed by European club PSV Eindhoven. He moved to PSV and instantly became the top scorer of the Dutch league. With his growing popularity in Europe, Ronaldo was quickly singed by Spanish giant FC Barcelona. At Barca, he got global recognition by scoring numerous spectacular goals. Moving to Italian club Internazionale was the next step in his career. Ronaldo's start in the Calcio was promising, but playing against rough Italian defenders gradually took the toll and he was often injured.

Ronaldo has enjoyed success at the international level, winning the 1994 and 2002 FIFA World Cup with Brazil. Ronaldo has won three FIFA World Player of the Year awards (1996, 1997, 2002). He and former Real Madrid teammate Zinedine Zidane are the only two men to have won the award three times.

Severe Injury

The year 1998 marks a decline in Ronaldo's career. He lead his national team to a World Cup Final, but failed to deliver in the decisive match. His squad settled for second place, as a wide range of speculations from illness to black magic were made up about Ronaldo's indifferent display. By the end of 1998, Ronaldo was forced to leave the pitch after a knee injury which he picked up with his club. The injury haunted Ronaldo for a few years causing him to miss the entire 2000/2001 season.

As he recovered, Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid decided to sign him. In 2002 he won the World Player of the Year award for the third time, and transferred from Inter to Real Madrid after frequent disputes with Inter coach Héctor Cúper. His transfer to Madrid was the subject of a media frenzy not just laced with the usual hype because of his reputation, but more so because he was now the third successive superstar signed by Real as part of their policy of signing the world's biggest superstars (next to Zidane and Beckham) This change helped the prolific striker to resume his regular scoring. Ronaldo also returned to the Brazilian national team, scoring two goals in the 2002 World Cup Final against Germany.

New Record

During the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Ronaldo became the World Cup's leading scorer of all time after beating Gerhard Müller's record of 14 goals. Nevertheless, his country exited the tournament in the quarterfinals after losing to France 0-1. Despite his tremendous success over the past decade, Ronaldo has yet to win the UEFA Champions League in his club career. During the 2006-07 season, though Milan won the 2006-07 title, Ronaldo was cup-tied with Madrid and ineligible to take part. The closest that he has even been to winning the Champions League was in 2003 when he helped Real Madrid to the semi-finals, in which they lost to Juventus.
