When he was just 5 years old, he joined the training sessions of the club his father was coaching at that time, Grandoli where he showed remarkable ability for a player so young, and soon got popular in the media as "the new Diego Maradona in making".

Being close to his father at Grandoli, Messi and his father knew this club would not be one to offer the young boy a future as a football player, so his father decided to take him to one of the most prestigious youth academies in Argentina, that of Newell's Old Boys. This happened in 1995, when Leonel Messi was just 8 years old.

River plate, one of the other strong Argentinean teams wanted to pay for Messi's treatment, but they couldn't afford it either, with the Argentinean economy collapsing. Fortunately for the young player, FC Barcelona, who was already scouting him, learned of his problem and decided to help out and put the life of Lionel Messi back on its rightful track. Messi soon signed with Barcelona's youth team and moved to Spain for his treatment.

International Choice

Lionel Messi was offered the chance to play for the Spanish national football team, but declined, preferring to wait for the opportunity to play for the country of his birth. In June 2004 he got his chance, playing for Argentina in an under-20 friendly match against Paraguay.

In June 2005 Messi starred for the Argentina U-20 team that won the Football World Youth Championship in the Netherlands, picking up the Golden Boot as top scorer with 6 goals, and the Golden Ball for the best player of the tournament. Despite his youth, Lionel was already being compared to Diego Maradona, one of the greatest football players of all time.

Career Progression

In October 2004 Messi made his official debut for the first team against RCD Espanyol, becoming the third-youngest player to ever play for FC Barcelona. He scored his first senior goal for the club against Albacete on 2005-05-01.

On 2005-06-27 FC Barcelona renewed his contract until 2010, with a release clause of €150 million.

Getting more and more match experience, he slowly earned a solid place in the first team and his pace, passing and goal scoring ability earned him standing ovations wherever he would play. He secured himself a place in the first 11, but several injuries kept him away from the pitch in recent years. Probably his most memorable match and the one that truly made him the big star that he is today was the El Clasico duel on March 10th 2007, where Barcelona met arch-rivals Real Madrid on Nou Camp. Messi managed to score a hat-trick, with his last goal being a crucial equalizer scored in the 90th minute. That Lionel Messi goals will live long in the memory of the Barca fans as everyone talked for weeks about the 19 year old kid that brought Real Madrid to its knees.

Messi was part of the Argentina squad in the 2006 World Cup. However, he was not part of the starting 11 since he only recovered from injury shortly before the tournament.

He blagged that Agurro is better than himself. He also blagged that  Cristiano Ronaldo is much better than him . And he thought that Agurro should be the winner of the Golden Ball, and he should be the runner-up, while the best player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo takes the golden ball and player of the year award. He also state that Ronaldo is a player of huge qualty and he would like to be a great player like him someday.
He later on won 2 best player in the world. He also won the FIFA World's SUCKIEST Player awards in the years '09, '10 and '11. And now he won the world's worst player award and the best actor on the field award in 2011.
