Cristiano Ronaldo's Shirt Number at Real Madrid? Number 9 or 10?
By Danny Fenton
Cristiano Ronaldo is without a doubt one of the best players in the world. He is without a doubt the most controversial one and currently also the most well-known player. He has maybe one misfortune? His name! When he started to play football, there was already one super star known as "Ronaldo". So while Ronaldo (the Brazilian player) long-ago passed his best times as a player, people still refer to the Portuguese player as C. Ronaldo or CR7 in order not to make any mistakes. Now there can’t be a CR7 anymore at Real Madrid.

Living Real legend, Raul has the number 7 and there is no way that he, the club or the fans would accept Ronaldo taking the number from him. Raul is a survivor from the first Galacticos and I assume he'll be part of the Second Galacticos for another year or two.

Saviola is leaving Real Madrid, so Ronaldo could get the jersey with the number 9 easily. Even if Saviola would have stayed on at Real, he probably would have needed to give up the number, even Ronaldo desires to have a jersey with the number 9. And then there were the rumours about Cristiano buying the rights to CR9 to add fuel to the fire.

The other possibility is the Number 10. Right now it's Sneijder's, but maybe the Dutchman will leave the club during the summer. A scenario is possible in which Sneijder will go to Bayern Munich in a trade for Franck Ribery

Whatever shirt number Ronaldo will get at the end, three things are for sure.

  1. The shirt will sell well and will bring back to Real some of the money that they spent on this record transfer.

  2. The shirt will sell less than David Beckham's. Ronaldo is too controversial, even the fans of his own club sometimes hate him or are not his biggest fans to say the least.

  3. Neither the number 9, not the number 10 are a perfect fit for Ronaldo. He is no classic striker and he is no classic playmaker. It is really the number 7 that fits him best.

You're right, Danny. But one more thing we shall keep an eye on is whether Ronaldo can be as successful as he was in Manchester United or not. Beckham and Owen left their teams to the same destinations and they both failed to succeed. Can Ronaldo survive?
