Shakhtar Donetsk vs Werder Bremen. UEFA Cup Final 2009.
By Mani Honigstein

Tomorrow is the UEFA CUP final in Istanbul. Who cares? According to the interest of the media and my football fanatic friends around me, not many. One could argue that whoever is in the final deserves to be there and even if it is Shakhtar Donetsk and Werder Bremen. At the same time the game (at least on paper) shows that the UEFA Cup is pretty much dead in terms of its importance.

Bayern Munich and Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer (I just love to always mention Bayern in my blogs, even if they are about football in Ghana) once called it the "Looser Cup" and while our friends at the UEFA might not like to hear this, it might be very true. All the really interesting teams are in the Champions League, so it often seems that even the teams in the UEFA Cup are not that motivated to win.

Tomorrow I will be cheering for Werder Bremen because I have a lot of respect for the team, although they had a bad year. I like Diego who might come to Bayern next season, Naldo and even Frings. And I am also cheering fro Bremen, because (excuse my ignorance) I know nothing about Shakhtar Donetsk.

May the best team win.

Werder are like a climaxing bunch of women - hope they are going to get up in a good mood tomorrow. Also curious to see how Mesut Ozil can do under pressure.

Big shame Diego ain't playing due to that supspension which was not his fault! Its like tring to imagine last years final without Arshavin(no disrespect to Zenit)?? Thats what this final will be like. I predict 2-1 with Pizzaro, Jadson & maybe some like Frings popping up with a winner!! Will be worth a watch though for neutrals defo!!

@Henrik: Bremen should actually rest tomorrow. I need them on Saturday against Wolfsburg ! @Daniel: Definitely a shame Diego is not playing. He actually deserved to be there after his show against AC Milan.

Haha, the cynical Mani, wanting Bremen to go easy so that they bring their A Game to Wolfsburg!! I have a funny feeling that Bremen will still bring something out of the hat on Saturday, that said Bayern may not beat Stuttgart!Totally agree, the UEFA Cup has really come to life in the KO stages, i have enjoyed it. I don't know lots about Donetsk but they beat a good Kyiv team which caused Arsenal trouble. Big blows with the suspensions, but the way Bremen play, they always create chances so they can do it. Will be nice seeing a German team do something in Europe again.

I want Bremen to win their next three games, I also want Stuttgart to win the bundesliga. neither is that likely but i just hope Bremen beat shakhar and Mesut Ozil shows he can replace Deigo next season!

@Mani - good preview. Good to see you can support a rival team too ;-) Last game of the Uefa Cup before it transforms into the Europa League. I wonder if it will give it a kick-start and make it more attractive. I am not sure what to predict for this one, I think Shakhtar could cause an upset...afterall, they already knocked out some good teams...Tottenham included!

Bremen for the Cup.
