You've got to hand it to
Jermaine Beckford
- he certainly knows how to market himself.
With Beckford's contract due to expire in the summer,
Leeds
have the stark choice of cashing in on the striker during the January window, or keeping him within their promotion chasing squad and then watching him walk away for nothing.
Beckford has been whipping up interest in himself with some great performances on the pitch. He has notched 16 league goals this season, but has saved his most eye-catching performances for the FA Cup.
By scoring the winner at Old
Trafford
and then claiming a brace at White Hart Lane Beckford proved that he can score against the Premier League big boys. With the striker available for free in the summer clubs are queuing up to sign him.
The
odds FA Cup
bookmakers are offering suggest Beckford won't be gracing the Wembley turf this season, but he could soon find himself playing at a much higher level.
Championship club
Newcastle
have tried to steal a march on their top division rivals, but have had a bid of £1.8m rejected.
Everton
are also rumoured to be preparing an offer, but it's likely that Beckford will remain at Leeds until the end of the season.
This is the third season that Leeds have spent in League One and they want out. By cashing in on Beckford for a relatively modest fee, they would jeopardise their chances of promotion.
Should Leeds go up they will surely offer Beckford a new contract, but at 26 years old and having spent his early career in non-league, the London born forward has some catching up to do.
Beckford is on a fast track to the Premier League and has the pace, power and finishing ability to succeed there.
Spurs
boss Harry Redknapp has remarked that no club could go wrong by signing the player on a free transfer. The only question that remains is which one will it be?
Meanwhile, Everton, a possible destination for Beckford, are preparing to restart their European campaign.
The Merseyside club are seen by some as a good
Europa League bet
but they could face city rivals
Liverpool
in the competition and
Rafa
Benitez's side will be desperate to land a trophy.
