Austria 1-1 Poland
By Simon Head

Austria were handed a late reprieve after a last-minute penalty handed them a vital draw with Group B rivals Poland in Vienna.

Austria started the match at full throttle, but wasted a host of glorious chances in the opening quarter of an hour.

And the co-hosts were made to pay on the half-hour mark when Marek Saganowski's shot took two deflections to present Roger Guerreiro with a simple tap-in.

The goal came completely against the run of play, but following the strike Austrian heads dropped and Poland dominated the game.

The tempo of the game dropped noticeably in the second half and the Austrians in the stadium, both fans and players, seemed resigned to defeat.

But a last-minute free-kick gave the co-hosts a final chance to equalise.  English referee Howard webb stopped play to warn the Polish defence about holding and blocking, then gave a penalty immediately after when Marcin Wasilewski pulled the shirt of Sebastian Prodl in full view of the Premier League official.

Webb pointed to the spot and Ivica Vastic stepped up and hammered the ball into the top corner to rescue a draw, becoming the competition's oldest-ever goalscorer in the process.

Amazingly, Austria can still qualify for the knockout stages.  All they have to do is beat near neighbours Germany...

I am very much looking forward to the Germany-Austria match. Will there be another 1978 which we Germans call "the Schmach von Cordoba" until this day. I was impressed with the game, especially the first half. Austria for sure deserved the draw.

We love to slam the referees here in England, but Howard Webb had a good game. He wasn't scared to give the penalty, when most referees tend to allow offences to go when they're in the box. Usually, defenders have to commit physical assault to convince referees to give a penalty, but on this occasion, Howard Webb spotted the shirt pull and rightly gave the penalty. It's good to see the English officials doing well, even though our footballers didn't qualify.
