On Sunday, Chelsea played Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in a match that if they won, they’d go five points clear, but obviously would go one point behind in they lost. I had predicted Chelsea to win down to having the home advantage and the fact that Vidic and Ferdinand were missing for Man Utd. These game are always built up as being huge games that must not be missed, but in fairness, both teams end up being too defensive and they are disappointing... unfortunately, this was another one of those games, but it did have some drama.
The Blues were wearing the Chelsea home shirt, but in the 1st half, they were not able to break Man Utd down. To be honest, with the way the second half was going, I actually expected Man Utd to take the three points, as they seemed to be playing well and Rooney was playing extremely well up on his own. I do believe that if Berbatov had been available, Chelsea would not be five points clear at the top of the table just now.
However, after a foul from Darren Fletcher (which I thought was the correct decision even though he touched the ball), John Terry/Nicolas Anelka scored from the resulting freekick, meaning that those in Chelsea football shirts went 1-0 up after 76 minutes. I felt Ferguson waited far too long to bring Owen and Obertan on, almost 10 minutes after conceding the goal, which gave them very little time to make an impact. Overall, this game will certain not go down as a classic by any stretch of the imagination, but it is an extremely important 3 points for Chelsea. This game will mostly be remembered for Ferguson berating another fourth official about refereeing decisions (how many have gone your way over the years Alex?) and Wayne Rooney saying “Twelve men” to the Sky cameras (don’t you mean fifteen if all officials are so against you?).
