One of my favourite all time strikers, that I have been able to see most of his career,
Raúl
, leaves his home team
Real Madrid
today, with Schalke rumoured to be his destination.
I only got to really follow football on a big scale from 1996, and instantly Raúl caught my imagination. He was quick, had excellent technique, and a sweet left foot that could hammer, swerve or cushion shots into the net. The way
Thierry Henry
popularized the curled right foot finish, Raúl did the same for the curled left foot finish. He also had supreme intelligence, able to play behind the strikers, or lead the line on his own with his lethal finishing. His ability, aligned with the transfer capability of
Real
Madrid, ensured he won numerous titles, 3 Champions Leagues, 6 La Liga Titles, 2 Intercontinental Titles, 1 European Super Cup, and 2 Pichichi Top Scorer Awards. The Champions League has Raúl to thank for making the competition really live in the imagination with some of his performances over the years.
There will always be the question of his ability on the international front, he was part of a collective failure for
Spain
despite scoring 44 times (all time leading to date,
Villa
will surpass this soon though), and some will say Spain began to play like champions after he was omitted, as they've won the World Cup and European Championships despite him still being available for selection. There will also be questions about his influence at the club, being able to get coaches and players to come, leave or ignored is always mooted, but as a champion, he clearly wanted high standards to be kept, and for the most part, they have been at Madrid as his trophy cabinet will show.
For my estimation, I'd rate Raúl among the top strikers in the last 15 years, I won't give him a number as that'll spring a needless debate, but to have scored 228 league goals in 550 games, 66 Champions League goals in 128 games, more than illustrates the quality of the player.
How will he do at Schalke? They've just lost Kuranyi so he should walk into the team, but this is a new league, a defensive team when he has always been in an attack minded side, and he
goes
from playing with the very best players, to now having to adjust to players of lower ability to work with. Good luck Raúl in your new adventure.

Raul was a fresh young offering from Spain during a period where 1995 Ajax youth was the only challenger there was to an ageing AC Milan side, dominating Europe at the time. Juve were the alternative, as Zidane and Deschamps made further challenges to this dominance, side by side with Barcelona. Madrid tasted dry and ungalactical. Raul must be the first galactico, but more importantly, he was the first Spanish youth to reach a level beyond that of Luis Henrique or Butragueno, approaching that of Di Stefano (which was more an Argentinean wasn't he?). Guardiola and Little Buddha, Vazquez or Michel, Hierro or Nadal, Kiko Narvaez and those Basque heroes I keep forgeting, never managed to up the level. But since the arrival of Raul, the way was paved for Casillas, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, the two Davids... If it weren't for Raul, Spanish talents would've probably gone to be as good as a bunch of Joaquins. Exciting prospects, but not champion materials. Raul was the first. He was ahead of Spain's time. I am not a fan of his, but I think the current Spanish generation owe him a big thank you

raul should never have been let go, he deserved to retire at madrid. after all his sacrifices, been sent away was a disgrace. i wish he outshine ronaldo and all other players they feel could take his place. i just read that ronaldo wants to take his number 7 jersey. isn't that just a big disgrace and a lack of respect on ronaldo's part. the number should be retired cos no player alive could replace raul. not a madrid fan but i loved raul. shame shame shame. i agree with you @dmitri, but who is showing him respest, not madrid, not ronaldo and not spain. shame

i agree that raul should have never been let go. it was a sad day in football; but hey fome, no jersey number should be retired, man! because no matter how big a player is, he can never be bigger than a club or calcio in general. maximum that can be done is to put the jersey spot vacant for just a season.

no jersey number should be retired? well, i guess you wouldn't really understand it.no man utd player has ever been fully committed to just utd. they either come in or get booted out. and i said reserve his number, not change the name of the club. Franco Baresi, remember him? ac milan immortalized his jersey number (6).why, you may ask? because some players give more than football to the club.gabriel batistuta's fiorentina number wasn't reserved, but a statue was built to pay tribute to him. football is more than scoring goals, it involves commitment and dedication.don't you think players of their caliber could've left the club when the praises were highest?it takes a great player to stay committed to one club.ask TOTTI

ask sir bobby charlton. and duncan edwards was man utd til' death. ask giggs. ask scholes, ask solskjaer... are we still not that great? anyways, its not about man utd or ac milan, its about raul, and his legacy. to preserve his number would mean to signify that he was the best there ever was, and ever will be; and i dont think he was. even for real madrid, alfredo di stefano was a better player. so, i dont really see the point.

no offense to club, players or country but scholes, giggs and solskjaer are nowhere near raul. they played well during their time, but please, raul=madrid and madrid=raul for so many years. also, i don't rate players in the premier league too high. the league is just a big hype(lie), to me. if the best players don't transfer there, there has to be a reason. kaka, zidane, raul, messi etc would never be caught dead in the EPL till they are about 30+. And no player can ever be referred to as 'being the greatest' except brazilian ronaldo (not the fake ronaldo CR7). when you give giggs, scholes and whoever their testimonial, all they will ever be after that is a name in history. there will always be great players in madrid, but none better than raul in the NUMBER 7 jersey..

ofcourse no one is better than raul yet; but if you say giggs is any worse than raul, then you have to be joking. he is widely regarded as the second best player to have not played the world cup (after di stefano) and i really do not see how you can put that comment up.

second best player not to play the world cup, haha. do you know george weah? former world and european player of the year?. didn't even smell the world cup. giggs is good, don't get me wrong, but never compare him with raul, a living legend. giggs didn't do or accomplish half of what raul did. and who are the people who regard him as the 2nd best player never to play ath a WC? shevchenko, george best, ian rush, eric cantona etc are some of the great players who never played the world cup, now what number did you say giggs was again?

because he has played over 800 games with man utd, more than bobby charlton. acc to me, giggs is a living legend as big as contona(let him retire, he may be bigger). and shevchenko in that list? naaaaaaaah, the orher ones were great, i agree. but giggs has been a great role model, a great human being and a great player. very few have done that. you cannot disagree. giggs and raul are on the same level in my view

playing more games doesn't make you great, it's not easy to do and i regard him highly for that. a great human being and role model, yes indeed. but ask yourself this, has there ever been a time he should have been crowned player of the year? answer is NO. shevchenko has on several occasions been nominated and was winner of the european player of the year, won the champions league, been highest goal scorer in the champions league and league. he was also argued to be the best striker in the world at one time, so i guess giggs falls short.great when it comes to united, just about average on the world stage in my view..raul has all but the european and world football status, being 3rd&2nd respectively in 2001. UEFA Club Forward of the Year 1999-00, 2000-01, 2001-02, Real Madrid Record Goalscorer: 323 Goals, UEFA Champions League Top Scorer: 1999-00, 2000-2001, UEFA Chapions League Best Forward(3): 1990-00, 2000-01, 2001-02, Premio Don Balón for Best Spanish player in La Liga (5): 1996-97, 1998-99, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2001-02....please lets forget about giggs, he's good, not raul good.

fome, its sad to see that your hatred towards united eclipses your possession of good judgement. anyways, ill stick to my view, and so shall you. but just tell me, is owen a better player than giggs just because he won a ballon d'or..?

raul never won ballon d'or but i still rate him higher than giggs. it's not about that single award. owen was good, not better than giggs. but really, look at the stats and tell me if you still feel raul pushes giggs off the top

hey, fome, thats my point! no one pushes anyone off the top! they all go there together! :D no great footballer can ever erase the legacy left by his predecessors, or co-workers; they are on the same greatness level, not higher, not lower...
