Birmingham City: New Owner Takes The Reigns Of St. Andrews - Where Should Carson Spend?
By Nicholas DJ
In this blog post,we take a look at Birmingham City Football Club and their recent takeover by Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung in which has seen new opportunities arise for current boss Alex McLeish in a possible chance for the Scotsman to transform his already-small squad into a powerful force in the Premier League, reminiscent to Manchester City and their recent flourish of cash. But the real question is "Where Should Carson Spend?".We are going to take a look at that question and figure out where Carson Yeung should really spend...

Goalkeepers:

After aquiring Joe Hart on loan from Manchester City,Birmingham have been alright in goal, and, despite having a goal difference on minus, they really don't need to get a new goalie in.The media will start making rumours about Maik Taylor leaving and then it's going to hurt Big Eck,even if Birmingham get relegated to the Championship again. If they can get Joe Hart on a permanent deal, then he would probably be in rotation with Maik Taylor and Colin Doyle, wherever they are after this season, and then when Taylor's retired, they'll still have two moderately young goalkeepers in their squad.

Verdict: NO

Defenders:

Yes,Birmingham could do with another defender in their backline to strengthen their squad and it would be helpful towards their campaign in staying in top flight. They already have Gregory Vignal on loan from French outfit RC Lens and brought in experienced centre back,Giovanny Espinoza,an unknown 32 year old Ecuadorian who has played in his home country most of his career with numerous clubs and was brought to the Premier League with fellow international,Chucho Benitez.

Rating: 6/10
Verdict: YES

Midfielders:

After watching Birmingham's goalless thriller against Man City,it has become apparent to me that the Blues need a playmaker in their midfield.Despite having workaholic duo Lee Bowyer and Darren Ferguson in their midfield, their new signing of Chucho Benitez is not able to play at the pace of Premier League football without some help from behind him to provide that 'magic' at St. Andrews or away from it.Bowyer and Ferguson are not the right players in making 'killer balls' to their team-mates and Gary McSheffrey is not good enough to do so.Teemu Tainio joined the Brummies on a loan deal from Sunderland, but is still not good enough. If McLeish can splash the cash on a person who can really deliver, then Birmingham will have a dangerous strikeforce.

Rating 5/10
Verdict: YES

Forwards:

We haven't really seen the 'best of Benitez' as he still gets to grips with Premier League football. The 23 year old hitman from Ecuador is said to be a powerful target man in which has agility on the ball that can score goals. The £9million record signing is yet to score and, with the standards expected of him so high,Big Eck may have missed the target.Pacy striker Cameron Jerome has not even been whispered in the same breath of Birmingham forwards as the young #10 from Huddersfield still sits on the bench for McLeish while the likes of Scotsman James McFadden and veteraned striker Kevin Phillips still make that mark on the Premier League.I would say yes,but I am undecided on Benitez. If 'Chucho' does not produce this season, then Big Eck will really have a bad signing on his hands.I would recommend a player like James Beattie being bought because, really,James can score.Fact.He did it for Southampton,he did it for Sheffield United,he's doing it now for Stoke,so,why not? It's only the case whether on not Beattie would sign for Birmingham. He must be enjoying life at the Britannia so it's unlikely. If not, sign Heskey. He has been found surplus to requirements at Villa Park and, despite the two clubs being rivals,Villa don't care about Emile and Birmingham probably would.

Rating: 6/10
Verdict: YES

Manager:

Alex definately doesn't need to be replaced,if he was, then it would be the start of a downhill slope for Birmingham.McLeish has experience from being in the Scottish football leagues and has definately gained experience from being the boss at St. Andrews in Birmingham,so really,it's only the need of time and patience from Carson Yeung to see Big Eck shine.Just have a little,patience...

Rating: 7/10
Verdict: NO

Total:

Defenders: 6/10
Midfielders: 5/10
Forwards: 6/10
Manager: 7/10

TOTAL: 24/40

i am not sure what the ratings are indicating, but i saw mcleish made sure to stamp his authority - as managers generally try to do - on birmingham's future transfers. will birmingham be able to survive the drop...even with new signings?

The ratings specify how good each part of the team and with the ratings it shows how good or bad they are.And it is just to bring attention to areas which need improving - in my opinion.
