Today over lunch I had a discussion with my friends regarding the best goal keeper of all time and currently. Since the transfer rumors seem to be a bit quiet for now after the big bang and since I am not that interested in seeing South Africa vs Iraq playing (no offense), this was a good topic for our lunch. (especially since the food was not great)
As a Bayern fan and neutral observer, the all time question is easily solved: It can only be Oliver Kahn. Now there might be people who will argue that it was Sepp Maier, Lev Yashin or Dino Zoff. Out of those I only saw Dino Zoff play and since I was too young to remember, I can only vote for Kahn.

Oliver Kahn was the leading figure at Bayern in the last ten years. He was constantly playing on the highest level, made almost no mistakes and saved the impossible balls. Because of his grim look, strikers were afraid to come close to him and maybe rightly so. It was because of Kahn that Germany made it with a really bad team into the World Cup final of 2002 and it was because of him that Bayern won the Champions League in 2001. Kahn had only two mediocre years and that was in 2005 and 2006 when he started to date a 18 year old. That is never good for your performance.  If Kahn would have been a striker and not a goalkeeper hw would easily have broken Cristiano Ronaldo's record for being the most expensive player.
My friends obviously disagreed, but only because a.) they like to disagree with me on all football related topics b.) nobody besides Bayern fans likes Kahn and c.) they have no idea about football. So here some highlights for them and the Footbo community:

The question regarding the current best goalkeeper is a more tricky one. Two years ago I would have said Gianluigi Buffon from Juventus Turin. He had an amazing World Cup and was also the best Italian player during the Euro 2008. I think he is still good but he is outshined by two other goalkeepers. Interestingly enough they both play for teams that I can't stand, but still one needs to acknowledge their performances.
The first is Edwin van der Saar. Van der Saar has always been a good goalkeeper, but in his last years he became an excellent one. He makes almost no mistakes and sometimes even manages to save balls that are impossible to save. He is getting better the older he gets and I am really impressed with him and his performance although he is a Manchester United player.

The second is Iker Casillas. Not only is Casillas playing for Real Madrid, a team that I cannot stand since I am a Barcelona fan. Casillas is also Spanish, a country that has not a great goalkeeper history. Remember Andoni Zubizarreta ? He was one of the reasons Spain could never win anything. Now Casillas made a lot of easy mistakes when he was younger, but he is getting better and better. He is extremely fast and is saving some goals that I believe are for sure in.

Although he received 6 against arch rival Barcelona, he is for me currently the best keeper.

I´m a big fan of Casillas but I follow Júlio César from the beginning of his career and for me he is currently the best.

Thanks for the comment. Actually I wanted to include him as my number 3. But then I have to admit I only really saw him play in the Champions League.

Unfortunately we haven´t been born yet when goalkeeping (and the game along with it) was invented, as you have mentioned. So saying who is the best goalkeeper to date is impossible. Add that goalkeeping in general has undergone change. I remember being very impressed seeing Yashin for the first time in some Eurosport classics. As well watching this crazy, moustached Englishman in the Euros 1996, the first tournament I consciously followed. Ironically, Seaman, who tourned into a more and more tragic figure towards the end of his career, has made one of the most fascinating saves I´ve ever seen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKjO4C6tbWw Today there´s no doubt for me about Casillas beeing the number one goalkeeper. His reflexes have been magnifiscent from the begining but beeing experienced now his positioning has improved as well as his whole appearance.

well its not and easy choice ye julio cesar is a good one buffon too from the all time goalkeepers you do not forget Gordon Banks that is always mentioned as one of the great one
15.06.2009 23:05
I think Buffon will be remebered as one of the best for sure, if not the best for me. Banks is right up there as is lev Yashin. Casillas is without doubt world class as is Julio Cesar. Who is the best at the moment? For me Cesar is, usually the difference for Inter. That being said Sebastien Frey is very underated in a discussion like this. A consumate performer who has been criminally neglected by France for years.

Statistically, and from the little Ive been able to see of him, Yashin HAS to be the greatest of all time. I rate Schmeichel above Kahn, and think Casillas- easily the world current #1- could surpass them all.

casillas nd kahn for me ..............i always look upon these 2 when goal keeping is concerned........
16.06.2009 06:58
Kahn was rated as the best not only because of the goal keeping skills but for the whole package - His character , his leadership and the sheer ability to make a pathetic defence look Ok ( Germany at WC 2002) ..... Schmeichel was an amazing GK - But I personally don't think there is One GK today who is head shoulders above others - Casillas , VDS , Cech , Gigi Buffon etc are right up there...Its like comparing Schumi with Senna no clear winner

@Michael: I think Cech lost it a bit. Too unsecure. @UpnFufu: Schmeichel ? That hits me really hard.... @Henrik: Seamon is unworthy to be even mentioned here.

I agree with you Mani that only Bayern fans can see Kahn as the best... He was in deed one of them, but I believe that Casillas, with everything his achieved so far and considering he still has a long way to go, has already passed Kahn in the All Time Hall of Fame. I've seen Yashin on videos and they both seem to be made out of the same wood: the skills beneath the crossbar is their personality, unlike Kahn, who had to build up the whole character of the goalkeeper that infers fear in the oponent. I also want to mention Julio Cesar, he is definetely reaching top level. And on a historical perspective, I'd like to mention Argentina's international Ubaldo Fillol, who was a crucial star for the National team and many big clubs.

@mich...........yea i had to remind people.......about dida.guess all have forgotten the brasilian...i agree he is old..but not so old to be forgotten either.lol...........

Hi, Mani. Very interesting blog entry, as always. My father claims that the best goalie of all times was Radenkovicz (1860 Munich) - of course before your or my time. I still remember Eicke Immel who has nothing to be ashamed of. Unmentioned in your entry was Barthez (France) who should definetely be up there with the best - even though he has the mark of shame of letting Italy's goals in at the World Cup Final...

you say about Spain... "a country that has not a great goalkeeper history" Go to Wikipedia...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IFFHS_World's_Best_Goalkeeper at the end you'll see a IFFHS list of the World's Goalkeeper of the Century... the fith best IN HISTORY is Spanish... Rizardo Zamora.......and you're forgetting about Arkonada, Iribar, Cañizares and a long list...Zubizarreta was the odd one out.... Csillas is the best right now precisly because he won the EUROCUP recently...Holland didn't...and Valdes is not bad considering he helped Barcelona win everyhting!
