Today Tottenham entertain Chelsea at White Heart Lane. It's the next game of Tottenham's seemingly meaningless remaining fixtures, whilst the result of this game could prove to be crucial to Chelsea and the others competing to be crowned the Premier League Champions of the season.
Juande Ramos has thrown down the gauntlet to his squad by holding a metaphorical axe above their heads. It's somewhat simple: Ramos now doesn’t have much pressure to achieve great things (having already qualified for Europe after winning the Carling Cup) and for him, the remaining games provide a welcome opportunity for him to assess what his current squad is lacking. But whilst the lack of pressure works well for the manager, will it work well for the players?
The challenge to "show me what you can do" and the threat of being demoted should performances not be up to scratch seem to echo in a vacuum. The threat of relegation is minimal and there is literally no chance of breaking into the top six in the remaining games.
So what will we see from the Tottenham team? Well, from the past few games, the one thing we are guaranteed is inconsistency; a good performance here, a lapse of concentration here, as well as the odd flash of brilliance and the odd mistake.
Much has been said and written in the past week about the "petulance" of Robbie Keane following his substitution against Manchester City. As a life-long (I am only 26 so that might not mean as much to everyone) Tottenham fan, I can say that the few things I love to see are a player giving his all for the match; chasing those loose balls, tracking back and getting in the tackle, giving every effort to win back a lost ball, etc.
There are two players who especially jump to mind with regards to these considerations. The first is Robbie Keane. I can accept his reaction because this is a player who has given his all, every ounce for the club I support. I will always admire the skillful player who can change a match and win it for Tottenham, but no one claims more respect in my heart as a Spurs fan than a player who does everything for the love of the club.
The second player, Steed Malbranque, can be summed up in two words: work-horse. This is a player who just does not stop. He will keep running until his legs literally fall off. I appreciate this. However, whether he has the quality that Ramos is looking for is another issue.
At the end of the day, as a fan of the club, and of the game, I want to see the Tottenham players giving their all, tonight especially; If not for the manager, and if not for their future places at the club, then for the fans.
