Gunner's display against Chelsea proves Wenger needs to buy in January
By Nicholas DJ
Chelsea's 3-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates proved their dominance in the Premier League this season as Carlo Ancelotti's side have now built an established rule at the top of the table where Manchester United are still closing on,especially with their 4-1 win over Pompey at Fratton Park, the game where Alex Ferguson was serving the first of his two-match ban.Didier Drogba's double and Dutch centre-back Thomas Vermaelen's accidental own goal put the game out of Wenger's favour for most of the second half as Chelsea's defensive line proved to be too tight and too strong to be penetrated.

The first half saw the Gunners dominate the first part of the first half until Chelsea's counter-attacking methods came close on a number of occasions, with Manuel Almunia screaming at his defence to do better.Ex-Arsenal fullback Ashley Cole set up Ivorian hitman Didier Drogba before the half ended where his side-footed volley hit the underside of the bar,off the post and bouncing into the net.The 28-year-old's stylish flair against the helpless Arsenal players led to his pinpoint cross that marked out Drogba, who was in an 'undefendable area' (quoted from former Liverpool favourite Jamie Redknapp) to give the Blues the lead before the break on a rainy night in North London. And even before they take a rest,Vermaelen was the victim on the end of a recieving cross to put it into his own net and double Chelsea's lead, with a cheeky smile from Didier in the edge of the camera.

Going into the latter stages of the game, sheer despiration started to become obvious on the faces of Arsene's side as Theo Walcott was thrown into the fray, with Alex Song taking the departure off the field.Carlos Vela almost made his appearance on the field with £20million-rated French winger Samir Nasri taking to the bench. But with Vela came a controversial tackle into the penalty area that may of altered Chelsea's game. But the decision was ruled out by referee Andre Marriner as the Mexican forward looked in amazement how he didn't get the decision to go his way.TV replays show that he may of gone down too easily, thinking that Mr. Marriner would see it his way,but the ref in the black saw straight through him and continued play.

Going into the the final 10 minutes of the game,Arsenal threw more and more of their players into the onslaught as fouls were becoming more and more evident.Nigerian international John Obi Mikel was the man in the spotlight when the holding midfielder wasted time by keeping the ball away from Czech Republican Tomas Rosicky was said to have fouled him three times before the ref was to call over Mikel and give him a stern talking to,looking like he was going to recieve his second yellow of the game.Frustration showed when Arsenal's Spanish shot stopper Manuel Almunia pushed the puzzled 22-year-old to the ground in anger to not waste anymore time as the time rolled on.

Another cheap free-kick given away by Arsenal led to Abidjan-born striker Drogba in smashing home a 25-yard free-kick past Almunia and cruise into the final four minutes and shutting up shop until the final whistle.A number of offside and fouls whistled out by the officials were agonising for the Arsenal fans as they emptied their own stadium coming into the final minutes of the game to the rude chants by the ever-present Chelsea fans singing home their team on a day that was thought to have an even-game between the two sides.

In the aftermath of the match, questions were rising as to what would of happened to the match should Robin Van Persie not of been injured and taken control to being the target man for Fabregas to deliver to and give the Chelsea backline something to worry about, rather than Eduardo just being shunted by Chelsea and England captain John Terry and Portuguese stopper Ricardo Carvalho every time the Brazilian-born Croatain striker came into the Blues' territory. The Dutch ace is the Londoner's top scorer and has enjoyed a spell in the succession of goals this season and become a lethal striker on the frontline.Nicklas Bendtner's groin injury as forced Wenger to resort in choosing his younger and growing players to shine, but his plans backfired and had little effect. It was a 'Men against boys' contest that should of had more goals.

Even Togolese forward Emmanuel Adebayor coulf of been a dangerous threat for Ancelotti's side to comprehend with as the now-Manchester City target man was the main forward who led Wenger's 'boys' to the top of the table in the 2006-2007 season where Manchester United were always behind them until the Red Devils were able to win the title following into 2007.Today's match was a pivotal point that the French boss cannot rely on Van Persie and Co. to do the work. It's obvious.Renewing their interest in Marouane Chamakh may be a smart thing to do but with the money that Arsenal have to spend, there is nothing holding them back from achieving the top heights and actually winning something since 2005.

Now they sit in 4th,with Spurs ahead of them with Manchester United now having a 5-point gap to close at the top of the table despite cruising against ex-Chelsea boss Avram Grant's Pompey.Liverpool,Manchester City and Aston Villa are genuine contenders in taking their shot into the title race, despite the critics saying it's going to be a two-horse race this season between Red and Blue. Now,the Gunners return to the Eastlands in the Carling Cup - this time without RVP.How will they cope? We shall see.

The sad thing is the team had clear deficiencies and these weren't rectified in the summer. Smashing Everton and Pompey is good, but losing to Man Utd-Chelsea cannot win you titles. The team needs players ready to compete with seasoned players, Fabregas has quality, but the likes of Essien and Lampard know how to win these kinds of games, Nasri and Denilson don't. Hopefully, January sees some change, but it is hard to see that happen.

The thing is Chelsea looks to be the most effective team this season , more importantly at times Arsenal appeared to concerned to express themselves- Am not too sure about changing the team too much. It was just Chelsea being excellent that Arsenal being poor

@ Michael i think you are slightly off the mark, we have been missing for many seasons a clinical finisher in front of goal. As Stanley said you can't/won't win the premiership if you can't take points against Man Utd and Chelsea. I believe we still don't have the right balance in the team. Vela, Denilson should not be in the team at all. They are good in the reserves but that is really as far as it goes. I would love us to get a high class keeper, losing faith in Almunia the older he gets......Will it be another trophy less season. On that display quite possibly.
